Celebrating
25 years of Mumbles Community Council, 1983–2008
After the demise of the old Oystermouth Urban District
Council c1918 the local residents of Oystermouth/Mumbles
decided to form the Community Council.
The main instigator, Mr. Victor Carney together with Mrs. Val Bevan, Mrs. Nancy Peter, Mrs. Peggy Jones, Maurice Edwards, and Werner Sivertsen, who became the first Chairman of the new Mumbles Community Council in September 1983. There were other people involved but their names need to be researched.
The first Clerk to the Council was Mr. Peter Douglas-Jones followed by Mrs. Liz Taylor and then Mr. John Pickard, and he served the Council for 15 years before retiring. (John Pickard may be remembered by some, as a young ‘bobby’ (policeman) patrolling in the Mumbles area).
You may be surprised to learn that Mrs. Val Bevan and Peggy Jones are still serving the residents of Mumbles as Community Councillors. The Council are proud to have their support, with their wealth of knowledge and experience of local matters.
