Oystermouth Castle

Subject: Oystermouth Castle dig
Pictures of the dig which is focused on the defensive ditch in front of the
12th Century castle.
This year they will be reopening and enlarging the trench outside the
western gate tower, trying to find out more about the ditch that ran round
outside the castle. They will also be digging two small trenches round the
back of the castle, as this area is put forward as being the outer bailey.

I.P.Dorothy Hughes
Royal Hospital Chelsea
Meeting with officials of Mumbles & South Gower branch of the Royal British Legion
Saturday 3rd July 2010
I left Swansea in 1943 (My Uncle was a member of the Mumbles British Legion.)
I served in the ATS attached to a M.H.A.A. Battery in the London area throughout the 2nd World War.
I married and lived in Oxfordshire for 63 yearsand had one daughter.
I trained at Westminster College Oxford to become a teacher and taught at Woodstock Primary School until retirement in 1982. After that I was a volunteer in a Hospice shop & Bodleian Library.
In 2006 I saw a TV programme ‘Once a soldier’ and read an article in the British Legion Magazine about the Royal Hospital and as my husband had died in 1991, I decided to apply to become a Chelsea Pensioner.
One has to be over 65 years old, have no dependants and have been in receipt of either a long term army pension or a war disability pension.
Until recently women were members of the W.R.A.C. and only attached to regiments. Now they join the regiment as a fully fledged soldier. At present there is a ratio of 10% women in the Army. The Royal Hospital is at present the home of 300 pensioners and at the same ratio as the Army could accommodate 30 female pensioners – come on ladies it’s a great life!
It was founded in 1682 by King Charles II and the word hospital then meant a charitable home. It was for the “succour & relief of veterans broken by age or war”. The first pensioners joined in 1692 from the Duke of Marlborough’s troops.
Today it is still the best Residential Home in the country. The grounds cover 86 acres and the Wren buildings have not changed. The atmosphere is one of caring, sharing, family with a respect for each other that is only felt among servicemen & women. You know that help and companionship is there if needed but you can close the door of your room and be on your own.
I was delighted to attend a lunch put on by the Mumbles & South Gower Branch of The Royal British Legion and further pleased to receive a branch crest from Chair Councillor Anthony Colburn, Treasurer John Beach and Bob Wilkinson as a memento of my visit.
